Because of the white ivory-like handles and the white colored sheaths of these knives, some Lord of the Ring fans refer to these Fighting Knives as "White Knives".

In the films, the handles were actually made from boxwood, a very light colored wood, not ivory. The above picture shows how the knives were strapped to the side of his quiver. This made for quick and easy access.
